The end of the ski season calls for a party and Appalachian Ski Mountain has the perfect plans for those ready to see winter leave the High Country.

On Saturday and Sunday, April 10 and 11, the ski slope will hosts its Meltdown Games, a series of free activities for those wanting one more weekend on skis or snowboards.

“We had a really good season with lots of snow and beautiful spring weather to wrap it up,” said Drew Stanley, marketing director.

From teams racing down the slopes in cardboard boxes and trash bags to a costume contest and the pond skimming contest, the two days are filled with ways to say goodbye to the ski season.

Work will begin soon on the skim pond, Stanley said, because it takes so long to pile the snow and make it level for the 80- to 85-foot manmade pond.

When it’s ready, skiers will try to skim across the surface without crashing into the water. The weather, hopefully, will be warm enough that if skiers don’t make it across, they won’t get too cold.

Sometimes, seeing people fall into the water is more fun than watching them skim across the pond.

The pond skimming contest takes place at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and Stanley said it’s one of the more crowd friendly activities.

“You have to be careful not to get too close or you’ll get splashed,” he said.

The Impossible Box Contest, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, is a spin-off from last season’s rail event. On that day, riders tried to stay on an 85-foot rail.

This year, because boxes are easier to move and position together, the hope is for a 100-foot ride, Stanley said.

If you don’t want to partake in the athletic events, you can still show up in your favorite costume and be in the costume contest for prizes. In past years, folks dressed up as sumo wrestlers; Batman and Catwoman have also showed up.

“This is a nice way to wrap up the season,” Stanley said. “We want to cap it off right.”
