An April Fool's Joke?

Almost Seven Feet of Snow For Boone, More than 11 Feet for Beech Mountain

Story by Corinne Saunders

This is no April Fools’ Day joke. High Country Press decided to take a look back at the unforgettable winter that most hope is, indeed, behind us, and discovered that Boone received nearly seven feet of snow in winter 2009-10, and more than 11 feet of snow fell on Beech Mountain.

According to www.raysweather.com, Boone saw 83.60 inches of snow, and www.fredsgeneral.com said that 137.1 inches of snow fell on Beech Mountain.

“We’ve been recording for the U.S. Weather Service for 15 years, and this is the [most snowfall] we’ve had,” said Fred Pfohl, owner of Fred’s General Mercantile.

Grandfather Mountain received “95.1 inches that we physically measured,” said Kristen Pickeral, public relations assistant.

She added that on a number of days, staff members were not able to reach the top of the mountain to measure snow because of heavy snow or icy conditions.

While it was not the absolute worst winter on the books for the High Country, local educational facilities of all levels suffered numerous delays over the winter and the highest number of cancellations in years.

Watauga County Schools missed 27 days because of inclement weather—the most days missed since the 1977-78 school year, a press release said.

As High Country Press reported last week in the article titled “Watauga County Schools Finalize Calendar,” the General Assembly waived five days from the 180-day school year requirement on account of the extraordinary winter, and the last day of school for students in Watauga County Schools is now June 4.

Avery County Schools missed 21 days because of inclement weather.

ASU missed three full days this academic year because of the weather, said Greg Lovins, interim vice chancellor for business affairs at ASU.

“The last time ASU cancelled classes to that degree was in 1993, when the blizzard in March led to the cancellation of classes for the entire week of March 15,” Lovins said.

The Watauga Campus of Caldwell Community College (CCC) missed 10 full days and evenings, said Dr. Sandra Phillips, executive director of the Watauga Campus of CCC.

Day classes were cancelled seven times in addition to that, and evening classes were cancelled two or three times, Phillips said.

“I anticipate by the end of the semester, everything will have been made up,” she said, adding that the college’s calendar will end as originally scheduled.

Time for each class must be documented, and individual professors are using a variety of methods to make up time, such as increasing the amount of online instruction, starting class five minutes earlier and ending five minutes later or having class on additional days when students are able to meet, she explained.
