Watauga County Beekeeper's Association
The next meeting of the Watauga County Beekeeper's Association will be held on Tuesday,  Nov. 2, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Watauga Agricultural Conference Center in Boone. Topics will include how to further prepare your hives for winter, how to manage hives during winter, planning the 2010 beginner beekeeping short course, the Eastern Apiculture Society meeting next year and pest management. This meeting is open to anyone interested in learning about beekeeping.

The Chargers & Rechargers Hiking Club on Monday, Nov. 2, will hike Green Knob. Meet at the Sims Pond Overlook at Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 295.7 at 9:30 a.m.

Bloodmobile
On Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 1:30 to 6 p.m., the Red Cross bloodmobile will be at the Holiday Inn Express, located at 1855 Blowing Rock Road, Boone. The event is by appointment and open to the public. Safe Babysitting Class
The Watauga County Chapter of the American Red Cross will be offering a Safe Babysitting Class. Free total cholesterol and diabetes screening

Fundraising donor management workshop
A fundraising donor management workshop is being offered for nonprofit organizational staff and board of director members. It's a custom-designed workshop for nonprofit organizations to evaluate how well their organization scores against best practices for donor relationship management. Included as part of the registration fee, workshop leaders will provide attendees with informational handouts, an assessment tool, and a certificate for one hour of consulting with your board of directors on topics related to donor management practices. The workshop will be held at the N.C. Cooperative Extension Office conference room on Nov. 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is $30  per person, and nonprofit organizations may register one additional person from their organization for free for each paid registration. The featured facilitators are Bob Holder, CEO of DonorExpress Software, and Janet P. Pepin, of Pepin & Associates, an organizational consulting and facilitation firm. Hiking club

Thursday, Nov. 5
Moe at Legends
Moe will perform Nov. 5 at Legends on the ASU campus. Presented by APPS Concerts. Perennial progressive rockers, moe, make their return to the Appalachian campus. This quintet made up of two guitars, bass, drums and percussion, have been making their mark on the music industry since the late 1980s. They have produced 17 albums, toured world-wide and  dubbed a "legendary jam band"by Rolling Stone. Check them out at moe.org. This is a BYOB event. High Country Cyclocross Series
High Country Cyclocross Series features weeknight off-road bicycle racing at the fully lighted High Country Fairgrounds. "It's great for beginners and kids,"a spokesperson said. Contra dance with waltz workshop
A contra dance with a waltz workshop will be held Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. at Legends on the ASU campus. Appalachian Heritage is bringing two special guests to the dance floor, Warren and Terry Doyle. These two will be making the calls, as well as facilitating the waltz workshop that will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. Music will be provided by  Hay for 3. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Prices are : $4/students, $5/guests.


American Legion Post and auxiliary meeting
The Watauga American Legion Post  130 and Auxiliary will meet Friday, Nov. 6, at 5:30 p.m. for a covered-dish meal in honor of Veterans Day. There will also be two  guest speakers featured. All Watauga veterans and their spouses are welcome.

 

Annual entrepreneur summit
The Center for Entrepreneurship at Appalachian State University would like to invite all interested parties to the eighth annual Carole Moore McLeod Entrepreneur Summit on Nov. 6. Multiple concurrent sessions will run at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. in the Walker College of Business. A keynote speech by Matthew Szulik, chairman of Red Hat, and the 2008 Ernst and Young National Entrepreneur of the Year, will take place at 11 a.m in Valborg Theatre. More than 45 business owners from around the eastern seaboard will discuss a variety of topics. There is no fee and it is open to all, but registration is required. Seating is limited. Poor man's supper
On Friday, Nov. 6, from 4 to 7:30 p.m., a poor man's supper featuring pinto beans and the fixins' will be held at the Rutherwood Baptist Church fellowship hall. The cost is a  donation to the Rutherwood Baptist Church building fund.


Open Heart Meditation
A free introduction to Open Heart Meditation will be held Friday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. at 577 George Wilson Road, Suite 4, Boone. Two Open Heart workshops will follow on Saturday, Nov. 7, and Sunday, Nov. 8, at 363 Daniel Drive. Cost is $100 for Saturday's day long workshop and $150 for Sunday's daylong workshop. Any previous participant can repeat either workshop for $25. Participants will learn practical exercises to strengthen and connect to their spiritual heart and cleanse negative emotions. Assistance to attend college
On Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m. a program will take place on "How the College Foundation of North Carolina Web Site Can Assist College Students."The presentation will focus on how the CFNC.org Web site can help college students find funding for educational opportunities in North Carolina. This presentation will cover the whole site, with special attention on college searches, grants and scholarships, career/personality assessments, and financial aid. Kickoff to the ski season
The Buckeye Recreation Center and the town of Beech Mountain will hold a kickoff to the ski season with a celebration at the Buckeye Recreation Center on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 6:30 p.m. There will be a BYOB cookout for $6  per person, special guests from Ski Beech, door prizes and a special presentation of ski movies that were filmed on Beech. "Please join us to celebrate the upcoming ski season and welcome the cold weather,"a spokesperson said.


A Dulcimer Christmas'
Presnell's Chapel Primitive Baptist Church will present its 10th annual "A Dulcimer Christmas"on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. at the Matney Community Center in Matney, located between Banner Elk and Valle Crucis on N.C. 194. Folk songs, hymns and Christmas carols played on mountain dulcimers made by Edd and Nettie Presnell will be presented by Susie Hepler, granddaughter of the Presnells. Other artists will also be performing, including a singing solo by Aaron Effoe. There will be special performances by storyteller Glenn Bolick and local dulcimer maker Charlie Glenn. Admission is $3, and 12 and under free. There will be live and silent auctions, adonation ticket drawing and refreshments will be available. Hiking Club
The Chargers & Rechargers Hiking Club on Saturday, Nov. 7, will hike Two Linville "Cool" experiences. The group will travel to Linville Caverns for a tour/walk below ground. And then travel to Linville Falls for a hike on the Erwin's View Trail (easy/moderate). Cost for the Caverns is $7 unless you are over 62, then it is only $5.50. Dress for the weather and the caverns. Bring a picnic lunch. Hot chocolate and hot apple cider will be provided. If the weather is a bit chilly, the group may end up at Famous Louise's Rock House Restaurant in Linville Falls. No dogs. Hike leader: Sandy Sisson, 828-295-8055.


'Giving Thanks' seminar
A seminar on "Giving Thanks" - creating a gratitude journal -  will be held at The Inn at Elk River. Cost is $150. Journal and pen are provided. The session is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch is included. Special room and seminar packages are available.

Marriage workshop
A marriage workshop will be held at Mount Vernon Baptist Church Nov. 8-9. "Whether  you are married, premarried or single and thinking about the future, you won't want to miss this informative two-day workshop designed to inform, instruct and encourage you to press on toward the goal of establishing a healthy marital union,"a spokesperson for the workshop said. As part of Mount Vernon's Sunday afternoon discipleship training classes, the church is offering a two-part workshop on Sunday, Nov. 8, and Sunday, Nov. 15, from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Participants will need to sign up to reserve a spot for the free workshop. Holocaust Film Series
The Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies is presenting a series of documentary and feature films. The film "Triumph of the Spirit" will be presented Nov. 8. Based on a true story, this film follows the nightmare of a Jewish boxer from Greece who literally fights for his life to entertain SS officers in Auschwitz, knowing that each victory condemns his opponents to the gas chambers. Oscar nominee William Defoe presents an extraordinary story of life and death in Auschwitz during the Holocaust. This is the only commercial film ever filmed on location in Auschwitz; (1989) 120 minutes. It will be presented at 2 p.m. at Greenbriar Theater in ASU's Plemmons Student Union.
