Motorcycle Travel, Riding the Blue Ridge Parkway Lodging

Enjoying The Ride

By nature, I am a rule follower. If the speed limit sign says 55, then I am usually within five miles per hour of that posted limit. Therefore, why would I want a sport bike that can reach speeds up to 180? There is no way I would ever use the upper range of the bike’s limits. I am comfortable going down the road with my feet up on my highway pegs and enjoying the scenery.

Speaking of scenery: what does the scenery look like at speeds greater than 100 m.p.h? I have a friend with a sport bike and when I spoke of the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway, he gave me a blank look. He rode his bike on the Blue Ridge but just to see how fast he could do it. He had no idea about the overlooks and the views across endless valleys or the wildflowers along the shoulders. This beautiful country of the United States needs to be seen in all its glory. From breathtaking vistas from the tops of mountains to lake and ocean shore drives, our country has more to see than any television show could ever offer.

Now I am not a “goody-two-shoes” who has never experienced some speed. I have been chastised for leading an informal group ride at 85 plus miles per hour on the interstate. (In my defense, I thought it was only 75 and I was passing some stubborn minivans and SUVs that kept speeding up as I pulled along side.)   Also, I have pulled back on the throttle of my Harley on an open deserted highway just to see what she will do. (She did just fine – my husband didn’t catch me for a couple of miles.) If I need to take off fast and blend into traffic, I can. If I need to pass, I can. Whatever I want to do on my motorcycle, I can.

Really, it all comes down to how you live your life on two wheels. If speed is what you crave and speed is the ultimate determining factor in your motorcycle choice, then a cruiser is not for you. If, however, you are into the ride and the serenity of just being in the wind with the world opening up before your eyes, try cruising at a modest pace. You will be amazed at the things you see.
Bottom line, as always: ride what you want as long as you ride and ride safe.
