An Opponent-by-Opponent Look at ASU’s Schedule

September 4 at Chattanooga, 3:00 p.m., SportSouth
About Chattanooga: The Mocs are coming off a 6-5 season and have senior quarterback B.J. Coleman (2,348 passing yards) returning. This will be the first time since 1999 that ASU opens the season against a Southern Conference foe. ASU is 5-0 in those previous instances.

September 11 vs. Jacksonville, Hall of Fame Game, 3:30 p.m.
About Jacksonville: This will be the second time in three years that ASU opens its home schedule against Jacksonville, which finished 7-4 last year. The Dolphins return running back Rudell Small, who ran for 1,074 yards last season. ASU is 18-3 in home openers under coach Jerry Moore

September 18 vs. North Carolina Central, Fan Appreciation Day, 3:30 p.m.
About North Carolina Central: Last season was the first meeting between North Carolina Central (4-7 last year), which ASU easily won 55-21. The Eagles have 17 starters back, including quarterback Michael Johnson, who threw for 1,931 yards last season.

September 25 at Samford, 3:00 p.m.
About Samford: The newest member of the Southern Conference has lost all three conference games to ASU. Running back Chris Evans returns following an all-conference season last year in which he ran for 1,152 yards. The Bulldogs were 5-6 last year and return 18 starters.

October 9 vs. Elon, Homecoming, 3:00 p.m., SportSouth
About Elon: This match-up last season was for the Southern Conference title, a game that ASU won 27-10 over the Phoenix (9-3 last year). ASU has won 14 straight meetings against Elon. Quarterback Scott Riddle threw for 3,345 yards last year and is trying to become the conference’s top passer in history.

October 16 vs. The Citadel, Family Weekend/Education Day, 6:00 p.m.
About The Citadel: The Bulldogs have won eight straight games against The Citadel at Kidd Brewer Stadium, by an averaging score of 41-18. With the late start, it will be only the second night game since 2001. Defensive back Cortez Allen picked off three passes last season.

October 23 at Western Carolina, 3:00 p.m., SportSouth
About Western Citadel: For the 35th time, these two teams will compete in the Battle for the Old Mountain Jug, which ASU has won 27 times. This is the first time since 1990 that the teams don’t play in November. Western Carolina was 2-9 last season.

October 30 vs. Furman, Black Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
About Furman: The Paladins haven’t won in Boone since 1996 and the Mountaineers have won a record five-straight over Furman. The Paladins were 6-5 last season and will be lead this season by wide receiver Adam Mims, who caught 74 passes for 878 yards last year.

November 6, at Georgia Southern, 2:00 p.m.
About Georgia Southern: ASU has won the last two meetings in Statesboro by a total of eight points. Last season’s ASU win was by a score of 52-16. The Eagles were 5-6 last year and led by defensive lineman Brent Russell (11 tackles for loss).

November 13 vs. Wofford, time TBA
About Wofford: Former Watauga County Pioneer fullback Eric Breitenstein, who had 157 yards against ASU in 2008 and was injured last season, is healthy and expected to start. The Terriers were 3-8 last season. ASU is 11-2 all-time against the Terriers in Boone.  

November 20 at Florida, time TBA
About Florida: The Gators, winners of the 2006 and 2008 BCS national championships, are coming off a 13-1 season and No. 3 finish in the nation. ASU is 1-11 all-time against current members of the SEC. This is the first meeting between the programs.
