ASU's Polar Plunge Rescheduled for Tuesday, March 2nd

Those who live in the NC High Country have a reputation for being robust, and many residents like to challenge their endurance by participating in the extreme activities that take place in the High Country. From skiing and snowboarding at the ski resorts where our NC Ski Cams are located to hiking or biking some of the area’s most rugged terrain, there is no limit to the number of thrilling activities in which residents of the High Country can participate. There is one activity, however, that tops them all: the Polar Plunge. One such event, which was broadcast live from our Blowing Rock Web Cam, took place a few weeks ago during Blowing Rock’s annual Winterfest. On Tuesday, March 2, 2010, another daring group of individuals will brave the elements to raise money for the Special Olympics during Appalachian State’s Polar Plunge, which will take place at the Duck Pond on the ASU campus.

Originally scheduled for February 18, 2010, App State’s Polar Plunge was canceled due to extreme weather conditions, including subzero wind chills and 40 mph gusts, not to mention a dock slick with ice, all of which would have amounted to unsafe conditions for participants. Now rescheduled for March 2, proceeds from this event will benefit the Watauga County Special Olympics. Registration will begin at 3 p.m. for a plunge scheduled for 4 p.m. Participants are requested to donate $25 per person; groups of five of more will be able to take the plunge for $20 per person. This will be the event’s twelfth year, and hopefully its most successful. Previous events have raised a total of over $85,000 for local athletes, with last year’s plunge alone responsible for over $10,000 of the total revenue. This year, some students have more incentive, as members of a new service club at ASU will receive credit for participating in the popular event.

With great prizes like gift certificates to local restaurants to be awarded for the best costume and top fundraising group and a chance to help provide local athletes with uniforms, transportation, equipment, lodging, and more, this fantastic event is just as much fun for participants as it is for spectators, so head to ASU’s Duck Pond on Tuesday afternoon to join in all the festivities whether you plan to take the plunge or not.
