Sunalei Preserve played host to an open house on Oct. 15 in recognition of Snake Mountain LLCs land donation to the High Country Conservancy of 132 acres. The open house was held at the 4,000-square-foot High Mountain Camp Clubhouse at Sunalei Preserve. Rangers from Elk Knob State Park were also on hand because of the parks purchase of 195 acres from Snake Mountain LLC.

Between 60-70 people attended the open house, a number which included members of High Country Conservancy, rangers from Elk Knob State Park, property owners, local bankers, and a small group of realtors.

It was a very nice turnout, said John Rice, founder of Blue Ridge Realty & Investments. We just wanted to hold an open house so that everyone could get to know each other.

As for the donation of land, Rice said that Michael Warner, the general partner and president of Snake Mountain LLC deserved praise.

Michael Warner was the initial thrust behind the whole project, Rice said. He had the financial resources to make it happen.

Rice said that the goals of Sunalei Preserve include developing property in an Adirondack-region theme that includes sustainable homes with a rustic theme and to make the land the main amenity of the property. The lots average between five to six acres in size.

The land that Elk Knob State Park purchased rests on Snake Mountain, which at 5,585 feet is the tallest mountain in Watauga County.
